A MATTER OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The history of the Dreyfus Affair is dedicated to all those who burn with righteous indignation against all forms of injustice, who open their compassionate hearts to the innocent and who consider it their supreme moral duty to right the wrong which has been committed, who are inspired by the desire to see the world become richer in love and humanity, in justice and kindness.
Bruno Weil (1930)

The Dreyfus Affair ... is the culmination of the antisemitism which grew out of the special conditions of the nation state. Its violent form foreshadowed future developments, so that the main actors of the Affair sometimes seemed to be staging a huge dress rehearsal for a performance that had to be put off for more than three decades.
Hannah Arendt (1951)

Beware, it can happen again. The Dreyfus Affair is not a mere footnote to history but an example of the mindless racism which led to the Holocaust and is once again on the increase in Europe and elsewhere in the world. Alfred Dreyfus, the first deportee, survived. Within fifty years six million others perished. Fifty years on, at the close of the 20th century, racial violence, persecution of minorities and ethnic cleansing have become everyday events with worldwide television coverage, anaesthetising the public to these horrors and preparing the terrain for future atrocities. The Affair remains a warning of the tragic consequences which result if evil is left unchecked at its source.
George Whyte (1999)

THE DREYFUS CENTENARY

The Dreyfus Centenary in 1994 was internationally commemorated by a series of academic, literary and cultural events including major symposia organised by the Musée de Rennes and the Sorbonne; the publication of numerous literary works; the showing of films on the Affair from the first silent version by Méliès to the latest American production Prisoner of Honor; the premiere of the Dreyfus Trilogy, comprising an Opera, Dance Drama and a
Musical Satire; numerous exhibitions, broadcasts and television productions (see the Dreyfus Centenary Bulletin).
